Meet The Founder

Virgo & Co. was founded by Katie in early 2019, with a mission of addressing the environmental impact of the textiles industry. Below she shares with us more about herself, her drive to start the company and what she wants to achieve!

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m a bit of a homebody at heart; I’m never happier than when relaxing with friends, family and Sam, my ginger cat. I’m also a fan of cooking up a good meal whilst listening to an interesting podcast; Deliciously Ella is my favourite one to listen to right now, but I’m always on the lookout for more!

I love art and painting, especially art inspired by nature and our planet! Learning more about the beauty of our planet has also inspired my wanderlust; visiting and learning about new places, cultures and people is a passion of mine that I have been lucky enough to indulge in.

Why did you decide to found Virgo & Co.?

I have always had a love for business and a dream of starting my own company one day. As a child I used to start mini businesses as a game, and I’m so excited that this has now become a reality. Funnily enough, my other childhood obsession was interiors, although I’m not sure I knew the word at the time. I used to beg my mum to let me redecorate the house (good call on saying no to a six-year-old there, mum), and would stay up to watch programs like Changing Rooms and Grand Designs.

Growing up, and especially in recent years, I became interested in sustainability, and realised the environmental impact of the textiles industry. At this point, I was studying Marketing at university, and knew I was going to enter the business world. I released that this gave me the power to do something about sustainability in textiles, by creating a business that raised awareness of the issue and provided our community with trusted alternatives to environmentally damaging home textiles.

Why the name Virgo & Co.?

It took me quite a while, and many suggestions from friends to decide on a name for the business but I eventually settled on Virgo & Co. I’m a strong believer in astrology, and Virgo is an earth symbol as well as being the virgin of the zodiac, representing purity, which I felt symbolised the philosophy of the brand. On top of that, my star sign is Virgo, so that may have influenced me just slightly!

What does sustainability in business mean to you?

To me, sustainability means taking into consideration the environmental impact of products at every stage of the supply chain, from the use of pesticides to grow crops, to chemical processing during the manufacturing, the pollution of water sources, and what happens at the end of the product’s life span. On top of this, it means considering the human cost. It is essential that we analyse the impact of our products on every human being involved, from the farmer, to the weaver, to the garment worker to you. Ensuring we pay fair wages, set reasonable hours, commit to safe working conditions and protection from harmful chemicals is a huge part of what we do.

How do you manage to make sustainability a part of your everyday life?

I don’t claim to be perfect by any means, but I strongly believe that if we all make small changes every day, together we can have a big impact. I recycle where possible, take my reusable water bottle everywhere I go, and I don’t eat meat. But I know that there is always more I could be doing. I am on a continuous journey and that means that I need to focus on continuing to educate myself and to make conscious decisions about what I buy and what I use.

What three things do you think make a house a home?

Oh, just three, that’s a tough one. Okay, number one: indoor plants – I love bringing nature into my home. Next would be scent, be that food, fresh coffee or favourite candle. Finally, I’m going to say tactile items – nothing beats getting into your bed and bundling up in your favourite duvet and blanket.

I want to be more involved! How can I keep in touch?
